Academic Help & Personal Support

At some point in your degree you may need some help and advice. The Department and University offer a wide range of ways of supporting students.

Departmental Academic Help

Tutors, Lectures & Course Leaders

All academic members of staff have office consultation hours. These are normally a few hours each week where students can pop in to see them for informal meetings about anything to do with a module or topic they wish to discuss further. One-to-one appointments with lecturers or course leaders can also be made via email. Part I students will see their tutors every week at seminars, and tutors will be available during open office hours and via email for support.

Academic Advisor

At the beginning of your first year you are allocated an advisor who is an academic member of staff within the department of English Literature and Creative Writing. He or she will meet with you once a term to discuss any issues you may be having or just to talk through how you are finding the course. They are there to offer advice about the academic aspects of the programme and modules. So if, for example, you would like help on Year 2 module selection or perhaps help with secondary reading, they can help you.

You should have the same academic advisor throughout your degree, although there may be instances when allocations change if the member of staff is not on campus. Academic advisors are also available via email or appointment.

University Academic Help

Student Learning Advisor

Joanne Wood is the faculty Student Learning Advisor. Joanne offers academic help to students such as one-to-one tutorials, support for students with dyslexia and runs the FASS writing space. The writing space is a  bookable session where you can bring along pieces of writing, or essay titles or feedback from completed essays to discuss with the Writing Mentors. The Writing Mentors are PhD students at Lancaster who know what is expected and will be able to explore with you how to improve your work.

Personal Support

POMs

The department has introduced a new Part One Mentoring Scheme called POMs. The POMs are a group of second- and third-year students who will act as a point of contact for first-year students if they have any issues or questions which they may not wish to talk about with a staff member. POMs will organise termly drop-in sessions where students can come and get to know one another and discuss life at University. They will also be organising socials to bring students from all years together to help foster the creative community that we have.

Colleges

Every student is part of a college. Each college has a College Advisor Team, made up of College Advisors who can provide advice and support to you with accessing university services, and on any other issues with which you may need help. Your college will give you details of your College Advisor Team and how to contact them.
